Rules of the competition

WHO CAN REGISTER FOR THE INTELLIGENT COMPANY OF THE YEAR 2018 COMPETITION?

Any organisation with at least 5 employees, registered in the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands can participate.

WHY 5 EMPLOYEES?

If there are fewer than 5 employees, the chance of having the exact same results is very high and can lead to ranking issues. We are working on developing ways to include micro-enterprises in the competition in future years.

WHERE CAN I SIGN UP?

The registration conditions are: the online registration form completed by the company and a further form for each individual team member (participating employee) and payment of the registration fee.

The deadline for applications is 30 June 2018.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO ENTER THE COMPETITION?

Taking part in the competition costs £28 per team member in the Early Bird period, until 28 February, then £32 per team member from 1 March onwards.

IS THERE A DISCOUNT AVAILABLE FOR CHARITIES?

Yes, registered charities get a £4 discount per team member, paying only £28 per participant throughout the application window.

HOW MANY PARTICIPANTS DO WE NEED ON OUR TEAM?

The minimum number of team members required depends on the total number of employees at the company. You can calculate the minimum number of participants for your company by using the calculator on the home page or by using the below formula, rounded to the nearest whole number.

(Total number of employees * 3.5)½

Following the above formula, for a company with 100 employees, the minimum number of team members is 19:

(100*3.5)½ = 18.7 ≈ 19

IF AN EMPLOYEE HAS ALREADY COMPLETED A MENSA TEST, DO THEY NEED TO RETAKE IT?

No, team members who already have a successful Mensa test do not need to take part in Round 1 but they can retake it as practice for Round 2. Individuals who have completed the test before and do not wish to retake it, will be required to indicate this information on the personal registration form. Their points will be 90 or 100, based on the table below. The number of individuals who have already taken a successful Mensa's test should not exceed 50% of all team members.

WHAT HAPPENS IN ROUND 1 OF THE COMPETITION?

Round 1 comprises a 30-minute online IQ test. Each individual participant receives a personal, one-time login code to complete an adaptive test. This means consecutive questions are selected based on the answer given to the previous one. Any individual participant who reaches the highest level of the online test (“IQ above 125 – 5% of the population”), will conclude the competition at this stage with the result achieved in the online test.

WhHAT HAPPENS IN ROUND 2 OF THE COMPETITION?

Each participant reaching the required minimum score in Round 1 will receive an email with dates and locations available for the Round 2 test. In Round 2, participants will fill out the official test of Mensa in a controlled environment. No qualification is needed to undertake the test and no tools can be used during it. Prior to the test, the British Mensa test advisor will give a short overview of human intelligence, IQ and how it is measured, and an introduction to the society.

ARE INDIVIDUAL RESULTS CONFIDENTIAL?

Results are sent to each individual participant in a confidential mail. Mensa, in accordance with its privacy policy, does not release to anyone else any information in relation to individual results. Participating companies receive only the aggregated total result achieved by the participants.

WHEN AND WHERE WILL THE WINNERS BE ANNOUNCED?

The winners will be announced as part of an award ceremony in November 2018.

WHAT WILL THE WINNING ORGANISATIONS GET?

The winners of each category can use the title: “Intelligent Company of the Year 2018”.

DO THE INDIVIDUALS WITH THE HIGHEST SCORES GET A PRIZE?

Individuals scoring within the highest 2% worldwide will be eligible to join British Mensa.

HOW ARE INDIVIDUAL RESULTS CALCULATED?

Results of Mensa official tests are defined based on zones. The number of achievable points depending on the zone is as follows:

Centile No. of points
<50% 50
50% 55
40% 60
30% 65
20% 70
10% 75
5% 80
2% 90
1% 100

Where an individual does not reach the highest level of the online test, their points will be the result of the online test decreased by 50. The lowest achievable point level is 20, the highest 74.

If an individual reaching the highest level during the online test decides not to take the official Round 2 test, their result will be 50 points. Each individual taking part in the official testing in the Round 2 will be participating with the Round 2 result, according to the above table.

WHAT IS THE METHODOLOGY BEHIND THE COMPANY RESULTS CALCULATION?

The overall result for a given company will be the arithmetic mean (average) of the results of its team members.
Should a company register more employees than the minimum required, the best results of the required number of participants will be taken into consideration during result calculation, except when there is a draw among the companies. In this case, and only to define the rank among the given companies, the following process will be followed:
  1. It will be determined whether there are further contestants at the given companies. If none of the companies has further contestants, the company having the lowest number of employees will finish in front. Where there is an equal number of employees in each company, the result will remain a draw between the given companies.
  2. If only one of the given companies has further contestant(s) then that company will finish in the first position.
  3. Should both (or more) companies have additional contestants, they will be ranked based on their individual results. First, the results of the best additional contestants will be compared. If there is a difference, the company of the contestant with the better result will finish in front.
  4. Should there be no difference between the best further contestants, the same process will be carried out with the results of the second best further contestants, or the third best ones, and so on, if needed. When there is no further contestant at one of the companies, that company will finish in front which still has further contestant(s), in accordance with point 2.
